Oxanabol is a synthetic anabolic steroid which was first developed in the 1960’s and is used clinically in the treatment of patients suffering from diseases where weight loss is a concern (particularly in treating HIV wasting), to help burn victims to recover weight, alcoholic hepatitis, Turner syndrome (in girls), and anemia. The first two effects are of interest to the bodybuilding community because it is caused by greatly improving protein synthesis, ergo accelerating the development of muscle mass. It is popular because it is considered to carry little to no side effects and thus does not require post-cycle therapy or supplements.

Oxanabol, derived from dihydrotestosterone, promotes as much as six times the anabolic activity of Testosterone with far fewer of the androgenic effects. For body builders Oxanabol is often used to build muscle without water retention and fat gain. In fact, Oxanabol is considered to burn fat (nearly permanently) even with small dosages and no exercise. Since 20-80 mgs per day are required to halt HIV wasting, it is recommended in the bodybuilding community to start at dosages within this range. Women using this steroid should use between 2.5-10 mgs per day in intermittent periods of 4 to 6 weeks.
