Nolvadex is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator anti-estrogen-like drug that works by blocking estrogen receptors, as is suggested, in select parts of the body. It was originally used to treat infertility in women (ineffectively), but is now used in a clinical setting in the treatment of female breast cancer and even as a preventative treatment for those at high risk of developing it. Due to the fact that many steroids are converted into estrogen in the body and that Nolvadex specifically targets breast tissue, it has proven popular in the bodybuilding community as a top choice for cycling, post-cycle recovery, and the prevention of gynecomastia.

Many anabolic and androgenic steroids are converted into estrogen in the body and, for men, this results in undesirable side effects such as gynecomastia, fat buildup, and water retention (which can hide muscles under a layer of definition-softening water). Nolvadex also can elevate testosterone levels which are generally suppressed or completely halted by steroids and thus makes it useful in post-cycle recovery. In the bodybuilding community the recommended intake to avoid estrogen buildup is 10 mg to 30 mg a day. Nolvadex is also effective at the end of a steroid cycle to help bring testosterone levels back to their natural levels.

Nolvadex Side Effects

Nolvadex’s Achilles heel, unfortunately, is that it can cause a slight reduction in gains. Nolvadex is also mild when compared to other anti-estrogens and, as such, may not diminish estrogen enough for those doing a heavy cycle. Nolvadex also has a host of side effects for women ranging from hot flashes and upset stomachs to a number of vaginal issues, vision afflictions, and birth defects in pregnant women. Many using performance enhancing steroids may not need to use anti-estrogens at all and should only do so if they feel that the side effects are pronounced.

Despite this, many bodybuilders continue to choose Nolvadex for its positive health effects. Nolvadex also remains popular as it does not negatively affect cholesterol levels in the same way that other anti-estrogens do. Because Nolvadex simply blocks estrogen receptors rather than actually lowering estrogen levels in the body, it preserves the health benefits of estrogen while preventing the undesirable side effects of high estrogen levels. Some studies have also shown that tamoxifen citratecan reduce the effects of gynecomastia thus making it a possible non-invasive treatment for the condition.

Nolvadex, which is no longer in official production under that trade name, generally comes in tablet form with about 10 mg to 20 mg of the drug present and is widely available in most pharmacies at lower prices than some other anti-estrogenic drugs and many sites allow you to buy Nolvadex online.
